Success Story - Kyle Schies

“Thanks to the staff at RHRW, I’ve come a long way in a short time, and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.” -Kyle Schies
In His Words...
“I was in an almost lethal bike accident. The paramedics said I was a '1-1-1' and told my friends to say their prayers because it wasn’t looking good. They weren’t expecting me to make it and here I am! Now I started walking. My speech has come a long way thanks to my speech therapists. Physically, I have come a long way thanks to my physical and occupational therapists. They are teaching me how to live my life again, relearning all the things I knew before. It was weird not being able to do those kinds of things and life knocked me back really far.”
The Full Story
Kyle was admitted to Reading Hospital after a very serious motorcycle accident, resulting in severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures affecting three out of four limbs and his pelvis. While in acute care, Kyle underwent multiple surgeries to repair fractures, as well as a tracheostomy and feeding tube placement. Kyle was eventually transferred to the acute rehabilitation unit for inpatient rehabilitation.
Upon initial evaluation, Kyle required a modified diet and thickened liquids due to swallowing difficulties. He had deficits in speech, language, voice, and thinking skills. He required assistance of two to three individuals for all mobility and self-care tasks.
After a course of intensive inpatient rehabilitation, Kyle was discharged walking with minimal assistance using a walker. He was able to complete his self-care tasks with little to no assistance, and he was eating a regular diet. His speech, comprehension, and thinking skills have significantly improved. Kyle was even able to visit his ICU and T5 Care Team during a therapy outing to say "Thank you!" Kyle’s determination and positive attitude played a huge part in his recovery. We’re excited to see him continue to achieve his goals!
